"Frank Sinatra, the Man and his Bands" is a performance produced specially for the fairfax jazz festival. It will feature The Starduster Orchestra with vocalist Chuck Campagnet. You will enjoy many of Frank Sinatra's biggest hits with special focus on the big bands he played with... bands such as Tommy Dorsey, Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Count Basie and others.
Our featured headliner for the fourth annual fairfax jazz festival, Jon Hendricks will also be joining us for this Opening Gala Event to help recreate some of "Ol' Blue Eyes" bigest hits. Jon will sing with the Starduster Orchestra. He will also sing a set of Sinatra favorites, and a few of his own, in a small group format. As an extra added attraction Cynthia Glinka and On The Dance Floor organization will be there to entertain you with exciting dance demonstrations and free spot dance lessons.
Jon Hendricks has been called the "James Joyce of Jive" by Times magazine and "The Poet Laureate of Jazz" by Jazz critic and historian Leonard Feather. His 1985 album "Vocalese" won five Grammy Awards. As written in the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, "He is a fine scat singer, and is also adept at imitating instrumental sounds that his improvisations often surpass the solos played by his accompanists. In 1958 he formed the celebrated Lambert, Hendricks & Ross trio. It was the first successful group to perfect the tradition of vocalise. They were awarded Top Singing Group honors in the Down Beat 1959 Poll.
The Starduster Orchestra is a traditional big band. While they play music from all periods, they specialize in swing, and other dance music, from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Playing the original arrangements with original instrumentation, their audiences get to enjoy the swingin' sound of the Big Band Era the way it was played.
The Starduster Orchestra performs at private parties and public venues throughout the Bay Area. Some of their regular venues have been the Coconut Grove, where they performed monthly for over three years. They have also played to sell out audiences at The Great American Music Hall, The Fillmore, Orocco East-West Supper Club, Joe Lococo's and the Sea Food Peddler.
